Power Factor Correction reduces Cost

An optimally designed power factor correction system saves money and increases the utilization of the electrical infrastructure.

What is Reactive Power and Power Factor Correction

All electrical loads with a magnetic circuit like motors, ballasts for lamps, transformers and pumps require reactive power to build up the magnetic field. The reactive power for the magnetic field has to be provided by the utility same as for active power, even though that type of energy is to the end user of little value. The reactive power oscillates with double the line frequency between supplier and end user (Power Oscillation) and causes losses. The phase shift of apparent power to active power is reactive power. The power factor correction compensates the consumed reactive power where it is used with a power factor correction system.

Why do I need Power Factor Correction

When the electrical network is loaded with reactive power, less active power can be transmitted or used. The reactive power leads to a higher current and to higher transmission losses.

The non usable reactive energy has to be provided by the utility at a cost. 40 to 50% of the consumed active power in the form of reactive power is usually not charged to the end user by the electricity provider. The excess consumption of reactive power will have to be paid for and is shown on the electrical utility bill.

How can Reactive Power be reduced or eliminated

Power factor correction systems can be installed to avoid the unnecessary cost of paying for reactive energy. Power factor compensation systems provide the capacitive power to eliminate reactive power that is inductive. With a PFC (Power Factor Correction) correctly designed is the phase shift Cosine φ between 0.9 and 0.99 inductive at the point of common coupling (Point where the responsibility changes from utility to end user). This way the grid and end user infrastructure is not unnecessary charged with oscillating reactive power.
The correct size of the PFC system can be obtained from the electrical utility bill or measured on site. Our calculation tool helps you to size the PFC.

Cost and Benefit Analysis of Power Factor Correction

The pay back of power factor correction depends on how high the charge for reactive power is on the utility bill in your company. The pay back can be calculated with the electrical utility bill. Eliminated reactive power cost helps you to become more competitive and reduce sustainable CO2. The pay back on power factor correction is most of the time very fast and attractive.

Products

Power Factor Correction Dynamic KDS

Dynamic power factor correction systems KDS are ideal for small to large scale businesses. They are easy to install and require little service and are paid back very quickly. Each year you will save energy cost with this system and also reduce CO2. At the same you increase the utilization of your electrical infrastructure and more active energy can be transmitted and used. For very dynamic loads like in elevators, saws and other machines this electronic dynamic compensation is ideal. The quick response time of less then 15ms allows to efficiently eliminate flicker.
